Netflix Series: Dear White People

Before I begin, you may not remember the movie, but I did my intake on Dear White People the movie and here’s that blog post: “Dear White People” Movie Review

Now evidently there’s a Netflix Series.

I found out about it from Facebook….it was trending like crazy and being that I saw the movie, I tuned into the show…..

ALL I can say is WOW!

It was just as good as the movie but even better and by the end I was ready for season 2!

The show is as similar to the movie as possible (only I believe it’s better acting)….

Apart of me feels like Sam (one of the main characters on the show) but only when she addresses stereotypes and defends her culture….

She is also half black and white and I am as well.

But I say I’m black, mostly because that’s how I was raised…

I’m sure Sam feels the say otherwise she wouldn’t join the BSU and have a radioshow hosting Dear White People.

I’ll start with a powerful quote from the show:

“Our Skin Color is NOT a Weapon, YOU DON’T have to be afraid of it”

Creative Writing Feature: Alternate Story Greeting Card Story

SEE FIRST VERSION OF THIS POST HERE: Creative Writing Feature!

*I made NO edits, this is how I wrote it in the class*

* This was also the original story, before the 1st one I posted. The class hated this one, but I liked my concept….although now I prefer the one I tagged above :D*

I really dislike going to work. It drives me nuts. I am not the standard pharmacist that just has a miserable time at work. I enjoy making the customers laugh, although they look at me like something is wrong.

Is it my uniform?

I stand at the register and wonder if this is true every time they turn away from me. I can’t help it, I’m eccentric.  At times when I am on the floor, I receive blank stares for what feels like longer than five minutes. As an observer, I am also really good at figuring out who is analyzing my horrendous outfit. I didn’t choose to wear these clothes; this is what I have to deal with since I started working at this dump.

The managers thought it would be a great idea for me to have on this bright red long sleeve shirt with random even and odd numbers displayed all over. I like to tell the joke of the day, “Do you know how many men it takes to screw in a light bulb?” I’ve been at this job for over thirty years, I deserve some humor every once in a while. Don’t you agree? Customers waiting for their prescriptions or refills look past me in deep thought or just roll their eyes.  They ignore me like I am a great big hole in the wall.

Do I scare them away with the perky expressions that follow my jokes? Someone once told me I remind them of the hip 70’s chic style with my big pink glasses and blue hair. My favorite fashion accessories are my earrings. Today I am wearing my light bulbs. Just as I was about to take my lunch, a handsome man appears.

He asks for his prescription for his grandma. I hand it to him, and as I am ringing him up, I am blissfully hypnotized and I don’t hear the joke slip out my mouth. He reads my name tag and says “Sally, why don’t you tell me that answer and I may take you to dinner.” I almost dropped the register as I answer, “Just one. He holds the bulb and waits for the world to revolve around him…..”

“Wake up sweetie. It’s your 18th birthday!” Kathy says to her daughter.

“Aww. Do I have to?” says Kristal as she crawls out of bed.

“Here, take this card Kris. I bought it just for you,” her mother says. Kristal snatches the card.

“Ahhhhhh!” Kristal tosses the card and quickly escapes out of her room.

“Hmm…..what’s gotten into her?” Kathy says as she places the card on the dresser.

I Did Not Consent!!!

***This post was inspired by a show called The Quad on BET. Specifically Episode 8. As well as my bf stating that a woman shouldn’t dress in short skirts and dresses to escape rape….***

Why is it that someone who NEVER experienced RAPE always has something to say???!

It’s one thing to be empathetic, definitely sympathetic!

But to open your mouth and say something so absurd that makes you look disgusting!

If you have not experienced RAPE then you should be careful what you say!

You’re not even expressing hurt or pain about the situation but is yet DEFENDING the situation over a piece of fuckin’ clothing?!

Men in 2017 really got their heads screwed up!!!

The older men, really got stubborn ways of looking at life….well SOME.

RAPE IS:

“unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or mouth of another person, with or without force, by a sex organ, other body part, or foreign object, WITHOUT the consent of the victim.” – via Dictionary.com

RAPE IS NOT:

Unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration BASED ON THE TYPE OF CLOTHING one wears without the consent of the said victim…. Continue reading

Creative Writing Feature!

Welcome back!!

Readers today I bring to you a creative story I wrote in college in my Write Like a Woman English 404 – class by my lovely advisor/ professor at Iowa State University. She was very inspiring and enlightening. She made us her friend while keeping it professional.

I remember at the end of the semester she prepared a dinner at her house and we had to come in our pajamas so it became a little sleepover. Everyone discussed their favorite part of the class and bonded as classmates. It was fun, the part about Iowa I like the most is the true adventures within classes and outside classes

But back to the facts….

It was a very inspiring class and I had so much fun reading all things woman, writing as a woman and being in a class full of women!

runningit

The professor told us to choose a greeting card from a pile and create a story.

By the time the cards got to me there were many boring cards that this was the only one left that popped…

I looked at like what am I gonna make of this?

Then trying to write a story?! Forget it. It was soooo complicated!

I kept sitting there like 🤔🤔🤔

Then I came up with a dream concept…

From here, I’ll let you read and please PLEASE share your opinion, I know this story is silly. I wanted it to be fun and funny…..although the class couldn’t really get the joke 😝

****I have TWO edits to the story but I will post the final copy and think about posting the scrap! The scrap was more of a dream from the daughter and the official I made it feel more personalized and a connection to the character.*****

Let me know what you think! It was haaarrrdddd to write but I think I did a good job being OUT-OF-THE-BOX :).

Friendship Denied!!

Ever feel deep down inside that everything around you is changing and you don’t know if it is a good thing or bad thing?

nonope

Something major was coming, yet you couldn’t put your finger on it……

thinkabout

Or eerily that you have a convo with someone that states being different to people in the new year and it seems like one of you might just be pulling the plug on the other without realizing it?

Also you had this same conversation with a previous friend who most definitely blocked you.

Well MY answer is YES!

I just experienced all of that.

I feel like this one friend was waiting for me to say something to her or waiting for the right moment to choose not to be friends with me….

And it was I that set it off…. Continue reading

Oh No! I’m Not Listening to You!

Why is it when you single you feel the need to chime in what you think is the best advice?

But is it the BEST?

Or the best for you?

Especially when a best friend is committed to giving you the worst advice only because they may hate your bf

or they are jealous of the life you lead

or jealous of the life your bf is providing for you…..

Some best friends are emotionally invested…

and too much to the point where they may think they are your boyfriend or girlfriend unintended.

Ooooohhh but their actions say it is so. Continue reading

Come on Barbie Let’s Go Party!!!

I have another thrilling post for you gals! Sorry boys, this one may not be for you :P. (Or maybe it is?)

The blonde haired, blue eyed figure.

She came as an athlete, a mother, a sister, a well known driver, pilot, doctor, dentist, hair stylist, housewife, replica of celebrities or collectibles and more if you will….

She was slim.

She was tall.

She had curly hair, straight hair, long hair, thin hair.

She had pink lips.

She had the best fashion.

She ensured happiness to all little girls.

Never letting them down.

Inspired girls to want to look like her.

Hell, adults had surgery to look like her and her boyfriend.

Ahh the boyfriend. Strong, chiseled. Light skin like she.

Blues eyes as she. Either fuzzy brown hair or blonde.

That’s right gals! I am talking about Barbie and Ken!!!!

Mostly Barbie in this post though!

Yaayyyyyyy!

*Ahem* Sorry childhood moment.

I miss my Barbies. I used to play with her all the time. Every weekend before I had any real friends, you could find me home creating stories for Barbies.

Maybe that is where my niche for writing came from. Hmmm….

My older brother even played with me.

It was fun.

I would make them go to college, high school, junior high…it varied upon age. I had a Volkswagen too…I really wanted that! Nothing else mattered for Christmas that day but that car for my dolls. Ahh, I miss it.

Don’t you remember when they only cost $15 to $20?! Not $50 to $60!! That’s why I had sooo many! She was affordable. In 1960 she was only about $5. The jealousy! Lol

By 2000, she dumped Ken. Did the dolls teach girls to rely on a man? Perhaps it did if Barbie wasn’t single for a long time.

I had all sorts of Barbies, Skipper, Theresa, Ken, Stacey, Kelly, and Tommy. Continue reading

I Wish I Were A Kid Again!

Ever sing the Toys “R” Us jingle when it came on TV?

“I don’t wanna grow up, I’m a Toys “R” Us kid”

WELL I USED TO SING IT ALLLLL THE TIME!!

I used to be that kid singing it as if I really could be a kid.

But now I am 26 and all I keep wanting to do is:

At life’s toughest choices. Being an adult is soooo hard! You have to take on many responsibilities such as paying your own bills and having a real job.

Then if you can’t find a job, it is even HARDER to find one.

Life’s cycle is ridiculous.  Continue reading

How Bad is it to be Surrounded by Evil?

When you are a child, no one instills in your brain how evil is among us.

It is kind of in music, whether you listen to it backwards, forward, it still has a hidden message.

Evil is in family. They smile in your face, love you and adore you until they can release you and betray you.

If your family is dysfunctional like mine, that definitely happens.

Family leaves you in the dark, giving you false hope of what family really means.

When you are down, they won’t pick you up.

It is within some friends.

It hides behind their faces…

A mask that is well worn. They take it off at night and call the closest person they can to reveal their evilness…. Continue reading
