Netflix Series: Dear White People

Before I begin, you may not remember the movie, but I did my intake on Dear White People the movie and here’s that blog post: “Dear White People” Movie Review

Now evidently there’s a Netflix Series.

I found out about it from Facebook….it was trending like crazy and being that I saw the movie, I tuned into the show…..

ALL I can say is WOW!

It was just as good as the movie but even better and by the end I was ready for season 2!

The show is as similar to the movie as possible (only I believe it’s better acting)….

Apart of me feels like Sam (one of the main characters on the show) but only when she addresses stereotypes and defends her culture….

She is also half black and white and I am as well.

But I say I’m black, mostly because that’s how I was raised…

I’m sure Sam feels the say otherwise she wouldn’t join the BSU and have a radioshow hosting Dear White People.

I’ll start with a powerful quote from the show:

“Our Skin Color is NOT a Weapon, YOU DON’T have to be afraid of it”

Creative Writing Feature: Alternate Story Greeting Card Story

SEE FIRST VERSION OF THIS POST HERE: Creative Writing Feature!

*I made NO edits, this is how I wrote it in the class*

* This was also the original story, before the 1st one I posted. The class hated this one, but I liked my concept….although now I prefer the one I tagged above :D*

I really dislike going to work. It drives me nuts. I am not the standard pharmacist that just has a miserable time at work. I enjoy making the customers laugh, although they look at me like something is wrong.

Is it my uniform?

I stand at the register and wonder if this is true every time they turn away from me. I can’t help it, I’m eccentric.  At times when I am on the floor, I receive blank stares for what feels like longer than five minutes. As an observer, I am also really good at figuring out who is analyzing my horrendous outfit. I didn’t choose to wear these clothes; this is what I have to deal with since I started working at this dump.

The managers thought it would be a great idea for me to have on this bright red long sleeve shirt with random even and odd numbers displayed all over. I like to tell the joke of the day, “Do you know how many men it takes to screw in a light bulb?” I’ve been at this job for over thirty years, I deserve some humor every once in a while. Don’t you agree? Customers waiting for their prescriptions or refills look past me in deep thought or just roll their eyes.  They ignore me like I am a great big hole in the wall.

Do I scare them away with the perky expressions that follow my jokes? Someone once told me I remind them of the hip 70’s chic style with my big pink glasses and blue hair. My favorite fashion accessories are my earrings. Today I am wearing my light bulbs. Just as I was about to take my lunch, a handsome man appears.

He asks for his prescription for his grandma. I hand it to him, and as I am ringing him up, I am blissfully hypnotized and I don’t hear the joke slip out my mouth. He reads my name tag and says “Sally, why don’t you tell me that answer and I may take you to dinner.” I almost dropped the register as I answer, “Just one. He holds the bulb and waits for the world to revolve around him…..”

“Wake up sweetie. It’s your 18th birthday!” Kathy says to her daughter.

“Aww. Do I have to?” says Kristal as she crawls out of bed.

“Here, take this card Kris. I bought it just for you,” her mother says. Kristal snatches the card.

“Ahhhhhh!” Kristal tosses the card and quickly escapes out of her room.

“Hmm…..what’s gotten into her?” Kathy says as she places the card on the dresser.

Creative Writing Feature: Short Story!

“Hurry up Haylee! I need to get you to school by 7!” She heads downstairs to make her and Haylee a bowl of cereal. She leaves the milk out for Haylee to put in her cereal herself. We are running low on Frosted Flakes thanks to Haylee eating it all. As she sits at the table alone, thoughts start to flush into her mind. Michael. She is her only daughter and her only child.

Haylee is a smart, good girl, reflecting the ways of  when she was a little girl. Mrs. Anderson rushes to the bathroom as she can no longer hold back her tears. She glances in the mirror, only to see the dark circles around her eyes from lack of sleep. She has been staying up all night, trying to plan today’s activity for her children.

I just want my kids to like me. Tears escape her as she tries to hold it in. Haylee will be done soon, she thinks as she hears the water upstairs cut off.  washes her face and attempts a smile for herself. Smile for Haylee.

“Mom! Where are you? I’m all showered and ready to go” Haylee runs down the steps.

“I’m right here baby” Katie walks to back to the table. “Come on and eat.”

“Hey Mom, are you okay?” Haylee frowns as she pours the milk into her bowl.

“It’s nothing you need to worry about, Love,” Katie smiles.

As Haylee eats her cereal, Katie remembers the first time her kids at school called her Mrs. Anderson. She prefers the name Katie, but the kids say her last name is cooler. It reminds them of the comedian, Anthony Anderson. That was also her ex-husband’s last name. To this day, Haylee doesn’t know the truth. Mrs. Anderson feels it is best to just keep telling her daughter “we are living in two different worlds right now babe.”

While thoughts of her and Michael file into her mind, her kids at school and Haylee are her only distractions….

“Mom! Are you sure you’re okay? It’s 6:45 and I will be late if we don’t get in the car now like we always do” Haylee has her book bag, lunch bag and herself waiting by the door. Shit.

Katie was daydreaming and almost forgot that her day was just ahead of her. She rushes around the house searching for her items for the day. Lesson Planner, Composition notebooks, pencils, salad, cell phone, car keys, candy, and stress balls. There is one more thing Mrs. Anderson can’t live without so early in the morning. That is her Starbucks Natural Fusion Caramel Ground Coffee. She gets a pot going as she fixes Haylee’s hair. She has long beautiful brunette thick texture from her father’s side.  brushes it into a ponytail with a bang curling on the right side. Perfect! She looks at her own hair in the stainless steel sink while she is about to wash the dishes from cereal and last night’s dinner. Her hair is wavy today; she decided to try something new. One day, she will like to dye her hair. She grabs the travel mug out of the cabinet and pours the coffee in it with 4 sugars and extra caramel syrup.

“Haylee, let’s get in the car sweetie” she says as she cuts off all the lights in the house.

Katie’s phone rings, but the call goes to voicemail. She glances over to read the caller id. Michael. She looks at the notifications and realizes she missed two calls from him. She presses her Bluetooth button on her steering wheel and proceeds to call him back.

“Good Morning Michael. You’re calling early”

“Yes. Good Morning to you too Katie. How’s my girl doing?”

Katie can’t tell if he’s asking about her or Haylee. She just knows it can’t be her. She concludes that he means Haylee. “Haylee is doing well. I’m taking her to school now. You’re interrupting her One Direction song by the way.”

Laughter shoots through the phone. “Sorry Haylee. Come say hi to Daddy!”

Haylee’s eyes light up. Mrs. Anderson smirks. “Hi Daddy! How are you?”

“I’m good babygirl. How are you?”

“Doing great! Even better if you let me listen to One Direction before I get to school.”

“Let me finish talking to Mommy and I promise you will.”

“Ok I Love You”

“Love you too babygirl.”

Mrs. Anderson is minutes away from approaching the school.

“Michael. I know there is a reason for your call. What’s the status?”

“Damn rushing me off! I see how it is.” He laughs.

Michael never takes things seriously. At least when it comes to Katie’s attitude.

“Damn ! Can’t a brother get some love? I’m doing fine thank you for asking.”

“That’s good to hear. Now cut to the chase.”

“I’m calling to confirm if it’s okay that Haylee comes with me this weekend? I want some father daughter time. I miss you….and I miss Haylee too.”

Katie is taken aback. “Well…uuhh….sure you can. Come pick her up Friday night. After I take her to see Monster’s Inc. I’ve been meaning to do that all week.”

“Okay I will. Do you mind if I join you two? You know I love me some kid movies.” This is true. Katie heart skips a beat. He knows how to sucker up to her.

“Michael! You know-”

Haylee chimes in before she can finish her sentence. “Yeeessssss you can!”

“Alright it’s a date. I mean see you guys Friday. , I can’t wait to see you too you know?”

Katie closes her eyes. Count to ten. Inhale. Exhale. “Ohh Michael. How you do this to me.”  Michael sighs.

“Mike, I will see you Friday. I have to go.”

“Okay. Love you guys.”

“We love you too.” They say in unison.

“Haylee baby, have a good day at school today okay? Mommy will see you later smart girl!” She gives her a big hug and a kiss.

“Okay. I love you mommy! Have a good day too. Bye!” She kisses Katie and hugs her quickly before rushing off to her friend. Katie watches Haylee for a minute then runs to her car. She drives down to the Boys and Girls High School, remembering the conversation with Michael, and Haylee’s perfect smile every time she hears her dad’s voice.

Katie finds her parking spot and turns the car off. She enters the building in a new light. There’s some hope that the love she thought would never exist, can still have a candle lit. As her heels click down the hallway, she feels more confident than ever before. She has two people who love her unconditionally and that is all she needs. She approaches her class and everyone is seated, and in deep conversations.

“Hello class! How’s everyone doing today? I will take attendance and you will come up and grab a composition notebook and a #2 pencil. Today is free writing day in your journals. Tell me how you feel today and you know what?” She smiles toward the entire class.

Hands are raised frantically in excitement. She chooses a girl who is always so quiet in class. She seems rather familiar. Then it hits her. “Yes Charlene?”

“There’s candy for writing and participating? I can see it sticking out your purse.” She nods her head toward the bag.

“Yes. For each question I ask you today, there will be candy going around. This activity will continue onto tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a little bit different. I want you guys to start being interactive. This is an English class. We’re here to turn things around. Just think of me as Hilary Swank in Freedom Writers.”

Mrs. Anderson takes a seat. The class is boasting in laughter. “Sarah Baker. James Barnes. Christine Davis. Charlene Rose….” As she is calling attendance, she hands the journals and pencils out as promised. She takes one for herself.

“Class. I will be joining you in this activity. There are things I will like for you to know about me too. This can be our self reflections to becoming better students and for me, a better person and teacher.”

Mrs. Anderson’s day is only half complete.

I Did Not Consent!!!

***This post was inspired by a show called The Quad on BET. Specifically Episode 8. As well as my bf stating that a woman shouldn’t dress in short skirts and dresses to escape rape….***

Why is it that someone who NEVER experienced RAPE always has something to say???!

It’s one thing to be empathetic, definitely sympathetic!

But to open your mouth and say something so absurd that makes you look disgusting!

If you have not experienced RAPE then you should be careful what you say!

You’re not even expressing hurt or pain about the situation but is yet DEFENDING the situation over a piece of fuckin’ clothing?!

Men in 2017 really got their heads screwed up!!!

The older men, really got stubborn ways of looking at life….well SOME.

RAPE IS:

“unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or mouth of another person, with or without force, by a sex organ, other body part, or foreign object, WITHOUT the consent of the victim.” – via Dictionary.com

RAPE IS NOT:

Unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration BASED ON THE TYPE OF CLOTHING one wears without the consent of the said victim…. Continue reading

Creative Writing Feature!

Welcome back!!

Readers today I bring to you a creative story I wrote in college in my Write Like a Woman English 404 – class by my lovely advisor/ professor at Iowa State University. She was very inspiring and enlightening. She made us her friend while keeping it professional.

I remember at the end of the semester she prepared a dinner at her house and we had to come in our pajamas so it became a little sleepover. Everyone discussed their favorite part of the class and bonded as classmates. It was fun, the part about Iowa I like the most is the true adventures within classes and outside classes

But back to the facts….

It was a very inspiring class and I had so much fun reading all things woman, writing as a woman and being in a class full of women!

runningit

The professor told us to choose a greeting card from a pile and create a story.

By the time the cards got to me there were many boring cards that this was the only one left that popped…

I looked at like what am I gonna make of this?

Then trying to write a story?! Forget it. It was soooo complicated!

I kept sitting there like 🤔🤔🤔

Then I came up with a dream concept…

From here, I’ll let you read and please PLEASE share your opinion, I know this story is silly. I wanted it to be fun and funny…..although the class couldn’t really get the joke 😝

****I have TWO edits to the story but I will post the final copy and think about posting the scrap! The scrap was more of a dream from the daughter and the official I made it feel more personalized and a connection to the character.*****

Let me know what you think! It was haaarrrdddd to write but I think I did a good job being OUT-OF-THE-BOX :).

Creative Writing Feature: Poem!

Creative Writing Feature!

I had to reinvent one of the hardest poems of my life! I am normally a poet, so you would think it would come easy. In order to ace this extra curriculum needed to graduate, I had to do it. First I will post Franz Wright original poem called “One Heart” and then below I will post my own. I really like how it turned out :). Let me know your thoughts!

Franz Wright Poem “One Heart”

It is late afternoon and I have just returned from

the longer version of my walk nobody knows

about. For the first time in nearly a month, and

everything changed. It is the end of March, once

more I have lived. This morning a young woman

described what it’s like shooting coke with a baby

in your arms. The astonishing windy and altering light

and clouds and water were, at certain moment,

You.

There is only one heart in my body, have mercy

on me.

The brown leaves buried all winter creatureless feet

running over dead grass beginning to green, the first scent-

less violet here and there, returned, the first star noticed all

at once as one stands staring into the black water.

Thank You for letting me live for a little as one of the

sane; thank You for letting me know what this is

like. Thank You for letting me look at your frightening

blue sky without fear, and your terrible world without

terror, and your loveless psychotic and hopelessly

lost

with this love.

Renovate Your Valentine’s Day!!

Let’s cut right into it. You dread this day. It’s like any other ordinary day. Right? This day is overrated and very dramatized to the point where if you don’t have a Valentine your friends question your life.

You’re sick of hearing “Who’s your valentine this year?” If you have none.

But that’s okay, I hope you downloaded the new Imaginary Boyfriend app to play pretend for just a day.

Don’t know what I’m talking about? Check out the link! It’s available on all phones and I believe there is an invisible girlfriend one as well.

https://invisibleboyfriend.com/

The messages appear in your inbox as a valid message from someone and look as such:

invisible-bf-appIt looks real doesn’t it? This will keep all your friends and family off your back for a day!

I don’t have the app simply because I don’t need it. Does that mean I have a boyfriend? If you know me, then you know the answer to that. 🙂

The app is quite interesting but aside from impressing the world, what else is there to do?

How many people are going to see 50 shades of Grey this weekend?

2-tv-spots-for-fifty-shades-of-grey

Come on where’s the show of hands? 😀

It’s a movie I am on the fence about because I LOVE the books and while I am excited they made it into a movie (I’m going to go see it eventually); I am not excited about the actor & actress chosen to play Anastasia and Christian.

However, Go spend V-Day with your GIRLFRIENDS and at night dedicate it to your boyfriend or husband. As for my singles, nothing wrong with spending time with yourself or go speed dating (if you’re that adventurous).

I specifically titled this “Renovate Your Valentine’s Day” because you should feel good about doing something for yourself for once as well as a new take on the “holiday”. The movies and the boyfriend app are typical things to do during this special event, but don’t forget to love yourself first!

The chocolate, flowers, dinner thing is sooooo old! Leave it in the past! Do something different. Hint at something new ladies. Whether it’s the favorite pair of shoes you have on your wishlist or just going to a craft store to make each other something, do it! Valentine’s Day isn’t all about SPENDING MONEY and if you DO spend money, spend it wisely.

After all, it is ONE day and it should be treated as a regular day because you love people every day even if you don’t say it and even if you don’t necessarily show it everyday. If you buy a gift, make it worth it and not just because it is that one day out of the year where all the commercials, family, friends, co-workers, and sales push you to buy everything to make her happy.

Ladies the men deserve some love too! Cooking is cool as well as expected, but what about his favorite tickets to a show or a game?

Love works both ways.

Love has no boundaries even if your V-Date is your mom, dad, cousin, brother or sister. Just make it fun.

Remember single ladies and single men, there are plenty activities you can do to enjoy V-Day. As I mentioned earlier there’s dating, or you can work (if you grind all the time), play video games, watch Netflix, or spend family time in the house with the ones you love on the daily.

anti-valentine-day

Even bake those sugar cookies everyone loves so much!

What am I doing for Valentine’s Day you ask? Spending it with the people I love the most! My “adopted into” family! 🙂

Turn the typical expected Valentine’s Day into something brand new. Then tell me what you did! Haha

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Here’s some V-DAY humor:
